Mike Whalen, MPA
Hospital Clinical Laboratories
Mike Whalen obtained his bachelor of science degree from Aquinas College, Grand Rapids Michigan, and Master in Health Care Administration degree from Western Michigan University. Mike has been administrative director of Hospital Clinical Laboratories in the Grand Rapids area for 40 years. During this time he established a Flow Cell Cytomerty and Molecular Biology Program to service all of the hospitals in the community.
Mike has been a member of the IACUC (Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee) at the Van Andel Research Institute for the past six years.
Mike's wife, Kay, developed breast cancer in 1991 and survived 16 years. This has sparked an interest in genetics and molecular biology. Recently, Mike's brother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and within six months his daughter was diagnosed with the same disease. She only survived six months and Tom 2 1/2 years, passing away three months ago. Tom's family lives in the Long Island Area and Mike spent time meeting with investigators at Cold Spring Harbor, Lusgarten Foundation, and Van Andel Research Institute to learn about PDAC and has become an advocate to inform both the public and medical community in the Grand Rapids Area about this deadly disease.
