Dear WICR Members,
It was great to see so many AACR-Women in Cancer Research (WICR) members during the AACR Annual Meeting 2017 in Washington, D.C. I look forward to meeting many more members during my tenure as council chair at AACR special conferences and at the next AACR Annual Meeting in Chicago.
I feel privileged to have the honor of serving as chairperson of the 2017-2018 WICR Council. Speaking on behalf of the 13 women serving on the council, we are committed to recognizing women’s scientific achievements and fostering the career development and advancement of women in cancer research. With the strong support of AACR leadership, the accomplishments of WICR members have been remarkable, and I am confident that we can continue to make a difference for women in cancer research.
Due to the incredible fundraising efforts by my predecessors, we have been able to expand our mentoring programs to include events at not only AACR Annual Meetings, but also at additional AACR conferences. This fall, look for additional WICR-sponsored mentoring sessions at the Tumor Immunology and Immunotherapy Conference, Oct. 1-4, 2017, in Boston, Massachusetts, and the AACR-NCI-EORTC International Conference on Molecular Targets and Cancer Therapeutics, Oct. 26-30, 2017, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. These exciting and interactive sessions are highly anticipated and attended. Details on these events will be forthcoming over the next couple of months.
WICR remains deeply committed to supporting the professional growth and development of early-career investigators. I am pleased to announce that we will continue to fund outstanding early-career investigators with WICR Scholar Awards to participate in the AACR Annual Meeting 2018. We will also offer WICR Scholar Awards for participation in the two conferences mentioned above. This is exciting news for WICR as we are eager to have an opportunity to support your efforts in cancer research.
Of course, additional funding is needed to enable these events and launch new initiatives. With this in mind, the council will continue to have a strong focus on fundraising. We will be reaching out to you to help us achieve broad participation of WICR members in these efforts, including the WICR Walk/Run fundraising event at the 2018 Annual Meeting in Chicago.
WICR currently has over 14,000 members and we hope to continue increasing our numbers and our engagement with existing members. Both men and women are welcome to join WICR and support our mission. Please feel free to contact me at
firstname.lastname@example.org with your suggestions.
I am so pleased to be working with the WICR Council to make this an extremely productive year for women in cancer research. Thank you so much for joining me in this goal.
