Robert Wallace Brockman, PhD, emeritus member of the American Association for Cancer Research, died April 21, 2016, at the age of 91. Brockman joined the AACR in 1958 and served as an associate editor for Cancer Research.
Born Dec. 8, 1924, in Chester, South Carolina, Brockman was a meteorologist in the U.S. Army Air Corps in India and China during World War II. Following his service in the war, Brockman received a doctorate in organic chemistry from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. He then joined the Southern Research Institute in Birmingham, Alabama, as a research biochemist, prior to his retirement in 1990.
Brockman’s research involved the understanding of cancer cell resistance to chemotherapy and searching for more effective treatments.
