Robert L. Capizzi, MD, emeritus member of the AACR who first joined in 1971, died Oct. 22, 2015, at the age of 76. Capizzi was a founder, president, and chief medical officer of CharlestonPharma, LLC, in Charleston, South Carolina.

Born Nov. 20, 1938, Capizzi was known for his work in clinical pharmacology, cancer drug development, and clinical trials. He was the former Magee professor and chair of the Department of Medicine at Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, and previously worked at several pharmaceutical companies, including as executive vice president and chief medical officer of Xanthus Life Sciences, vice president of medical affairs at Novacea Inc., and executive vice president for worldwide research and development at U.S. Bioscience Inc.

During his time as an AACR member, Capizzi served as an associate editor of Cancer Research, as chair of the Glaxo Wellcome Oncology Clinical Research Scholar Award, and on the Pennsylvania State Legislative Committee.

Capizzi also served as chair of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Oncology Drug Advisory Committee and on various boards for the National Institutes of Health.
