National Cancer Research Month

About National Cancer Research Month

May is National Cancer Research Month, and the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) would like your help in supporting a global awareness campaign about the importance of cancer research. Thanks to spectacular advances made by cancer research, more than 15.5 million people in the United States and millions more worldwide are cancer survivors who are living with, through, and beyond their disease.

Cancer Research Saves Lives!

Despite the significant progress that has been made, cancer is a growing public health challenge globally. The immense toll of cancer is felt not only through the number of lives it affects each year, but also through its significant economic impact. Working together, we can defeat cancer.

How You Can Help

  • Call on Congress to make cancer research a top national priority. Robust, sustained, and predictable federal funding is crucial for researchers to plan and continue the cutting-edge projects that will lead to new, better treatments and cures for a variety of diseases, including the more than 200 diseases we collectively call cancer. Learn more about the AACR’s science policy and government affairs work.

  • AACR Cancer Progress Report 2017: Read a summary of where we are, and where we're going in cancer research.
  • Read the following articles from Cancer Today, the authoritative resource for cancer patients, survivors, and their family members and friends:
    • "Searching Blood for Cancer Clues": Researchers are developing blood tests that help track and identify molecular changes in tumors. But many hurdles remain before these “liquid biopsies” become standard.
    • "Is 3-D Mammography Better?": A study enrolling patients compares a newer form of digital mammography to conventional 2-D digital mammography.
    • "Treating Early-Stage Lung Cancer": Efforts are underway to define the benefits of high-dose radiation versus surgery in patients with early-stage lung cancer.
    • "Liver Cancer on the Rise": Although there is no screening test for liver cancer, minimizing risk factors—hepatitis B and C, smoking, obesity, and type 2 diabetes—could prevent many cases from developing.
    • "When Cancer Survivors Get Another Cancer": Patients diagnosed with a second cancer may be unnecessarily excluded from clinical trials.
  • Cancer Policy Monitor: Read this monthly electronic newsletter to be fully informed about the federal policies that influence cancer research.
  • Read Cancer Research Catalyst, the official blog of the AACR.
  • AACR Annual Report: Read about the AACR’s progress over the past year in support of our mission: to prevent and cure cancer through research, education, communication, and collaboration.
