Associate Director for Science Policy Communications

Reports to:  Managing Director
Department:  Science Policy and Government Relations 
Location:  AACR’s Washington, D.C. Office
Employment Status: Full-time/ Exempt 

Position Description and Responsibilities

  • Works collaboratively with D.C. and Philadelphia staff to identify opportunities to promote the AACR’s policy-related activities and ensure consistent messaging;
  • Tracks current events to assist in identifying opportunities to develop policy-related press releases, op-eds, action alerts, and other collateral materials;
  • Issues frequent action alerts, and other internet mailings to ensure our messages are heard on Capitol Hill and promoted to a general public audience;
  • Oversees and serves as editor-in-chief for the AACR monthly policy e-newsletter, the Cancer Policy Monitor;
  • Develops, in combination with the Philadelphia communications team, messaging and communications strategies (to include press releases, op-eds, video scripts, website content, etc., and traditional and social media strategies)
    • To enhance AACR member awareness, specifically focusing on legislation and policy affecting cancer research and biomedical science; and
    • To enhance the general public and policymaker awareness and understanding of the value of cancer research and biomedical science.
  • Oversees Capwiz database and content;
  • Produces products for Capitol Hill and AACR members, such as testimony, one-pagers, pamphlets, and reports that highlight cancer-related science policy issues and explains how science policy devolves from science;
  • Prepares materials for high-level meetings and AACR-led initiatives;
  • Attends policy and science-related meetings and summarizes for AACR’s leaders and members;
  • Takes ownership for growing the list of individuals who sign-up for the AACR Cancer Advocacy Alliance, which is AACR’s internal “grassroots” effort;
  • Maintains responsibility for the database of potential advocates through the AACR Cancer Advocacy Alliance;
  • Coordinates initiatives, including facilitating webinars, to get AACR members more active in advocacy-related activities; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required;
  • Advanced degree preferred;
  • Background in biomedical or science-related field and/or public policy preferred;
  • Minimum of five (5) years relevant professional work experience required in public policy, communications, marketing, public relations, or similar field;
  • Excellent management of projects and team leadership skills;
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, for partnerships with both the AACR employees and external groups;
  • Ability to write for a diversity of audiences;
  • Ability to synthesize complex information and present in clear, concise, compelling manner;
  • Ability to read, research and interpret legislative and policy materials;
  • Ability to read, understand and translate scientific literature for a non-scientific audience;
  • Detail-orientated and highly-organized with creative instincts;
  • Ability to interact collaboratively with colleagues at all levels;
  • Strong computer and web literacy, including experience with social media technologies and online social marketing;
  • Experience with and understanding of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the broader biomedical research community;
  • Familiarity with the policymaking and legislative process and an understanding of Congress;
  • Exceptional communication skills: writing, editing and verbal;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, and knowledge of PowerPoint;
  • Familiarity with internet content management systems and email marketing software a plus; and
  • Understanding of the importance of social media.
