Scientist, Vascular Biology
Genentech, South San Francisco, CA

Passionate About Science
We’re passionate and rigorous about our science. For more than 30 years, Genentech has been at the forefront of the biotechnology industry, using innovative science to develop breakthrough medicines that improve the lives of people with serious or life-threatening diseases.

Responsibilities:
The blood and lymphatic vasculatures are actively involved in pathologic progression of many illnesses, hence therapeutics that modify vascular growth or function are proven to be effective treatment of human diseases. Genentech is seeking a talented and devoted scientist to design innovative therapies targeting the hem- or lymph- vasculatures. Areas of interest include inflammation, cancer, fibrosis and degenerative diseases. Genentech encourages the scientist to investigate fundamental questions such as: How do the vascular systems interact with disease-contributing cell types such as leukocytes, tumor cells and fibroblasts? Does transit through the circulatory system modify the pathologic phenotypes of these cells? Does the vasculature actively signal to these cells during disease progression? How do anti-angiogenesis therapies influence other oncogenic pathways? These questions should then be investigated using a combination of relevant in-vivo and in-vitro models.

A successful candidate is expected to identify disease areas, design novel and feasible strategies for the selected indications, lead a small group to carry out basic research consistent with the proposed strategies and collaborate with a cohort of multidisciplinary scientists to fully implement the strategies.

Requirements:
PhD or M.D with extensive postdoctoral training in one of the following areas: vascular biology, inflammatory diseases, tumor biology, developmental biology or genetics. The candidate should have a strong publication track record that demonstrates rigorous scientific logic, top-notch technical competence and excellent collaboration and communication skills. The successful candidate must be able to adapt to rapid changes, have a strong desire and ability to innovate and is capable of executing novel ideas in a fast-pace environment. Candidates are encouraged to submit a proposal describing the medical problems he/she is interested in and propose research strategies to tackle the problems. Candidates invited to an interview are expected to defend his/her proposal in front of a group of scientists.

Postdoctoral Position, Breast Cancer Cell Signaling/Mouse Mammary Gland
National Cancer Institute

A postdoctoral position is available immediately in the laboratory of Dr. Esta Sterneck, Laboratory of Cell and Developmental Signaling, NCI-Frederick.

Our lab investigates signaling pathways that govern mammary gland development and breast tumorigenesis. Specifically, we focus on the role of the C/EBPdelta transcription factor in the regulation of cell growth and differentiation using engineered mouse models and cell culture models. The current research emphasis is on understanding the molecular mechanisms by which C/BEPdelta can be both a tumor suppressor on the one hand, and promote tumor metastasis on the other hand. See the lab web site (http://ccr.cancer.gov/Staff/staff.asp?profileid=5589) for more details and current literature.  In addition, a manuscript under revision will report a molecular mechanism by which C/EBPdelta protein is downregulated in breast cancer cells by Src kinase signaling and the SIAH2 E3 ubiquitin ligase, and how this pathway contributes to transformation of human breast tumor cell lines. Furthermore, we are investigating the role of C/EBPdelta in EMT and sensitivity to endocrine therapy. Future projects may delineate the molecular mechanisms by which C/EBPdelta modulates EMT/MET and/or anoikis, and characterize the role of C/EBPdelta in the mammary and tumor stroma in normal development and tumor progression. Inquiries on specific projects and other details are welcome.

We are looking for a candidate with strong interest in all aspects of cell signaling and exceptional motivation for academic research. Only outstanding applicants with proven expertise in molecular biology/biochemistry/cell biology and less than 5 years of postdoctoral experience will be considered for this position. Experience with mammalian cell culture systems is required, as well as good oral and written communication skills.

The Frederick campus of the NCI (http://web.ncifcrf.gov/) is home to a vibrant scientific community, ample laboratory space, state-of-the-art facilities, and core support. Fellows from abroad will be supported for J1 visa applications. The laboratory is part of the Cancer Genetics and Signaling (CGS) faculty. Preselected candidates will be invited to submit an application for a CGS fellowship (see http://ccr.cancer.gov/careers/cgsfp/).

Applications, sent by e-mail to sternecg@mail.nih.gov, should consist of a cover letter describing research experience AND interests, curriculum vitae, bibliography, and contact information for three references (including the current supervisor).
