WICR Member Spotlight

We are extremely pleased to announce the addition of the WICR Member Spotlight page to the WICR webpages. This webpage exists to focus attention on the recent awards, promotions, degree completions and appointments of AACR-Women in Cancer Research members.  

The mission of WICR is to achieve full participation of women in cancer research by recognizing their scientific achievements and fostering their career development and advancement in cancer research through all stages of their careers. Sending your accolades to us for the WICR Member Spotlight will increase the visibility and recognition of the outstanding contributions female scientists are regularly making to the field of cancer research.   


Martine PiccartPiccart Wins Kamofsky Memorial Award at ASCO

The David A. Karnofsky Memorial Award, ASCO’s highest scientific honor, went this year to Dr. Martine J. Piccart, who is internationally recognized for her unflagging dedication and innovative approaches to the development of drugs and regimens that will truly make a difference in the lives of patients with breast cancer. Dr. Piccart is a professor of oncology at the Université libre de Bruxelles, director of medicine at the Jules Bordet Institute (Belgium), a member of the Belgian Royal Academy of Medicine, cofounder and chair of the Breast International Group (BIG), president of the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO), president-elect of the European Cancer Organisation (ECCO), and a past president of the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC). She has served as the principal investigator or co-principal investigator on numerous landmark trials, including HERA, MINDACT, and ALLTO.


 

anderson awardMD Anderson’s Women Faculty Programs received The 2012 Group on Women in Medicine and Science (GWIMS) Leadership Development Award from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). The award was presented to Elizabeth L. Travis, Ph.D., FASTRO, associate vice president of Women Faculty Programs, at the AAMC Annual Meeting on Nov. 6, 2012. 

Since the first award in 1995, this prestigious award has recognized the contributions of more than 30 individuals and organizations for advancing women leaders in academic medicine. MD Anderson’s Women Faculty Programs was elected as the 2012 organizational recipient for its commitment to advocating for the professional advancement of women in medicine and science. Women Faculty Spotlight

travis, elizabethElizabeth Travis, Ph.D., FASTRO, associate vice president of Women Faculty Programs, is one of 13 distinguished inductees for The Greater Houston Women's Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame. Dr. Travis was elected by the GHWCC board of directors and received the award at a gala on Dec. 6, 2012.

The Greater Houston Women's Chamber of Commerce is a nonprofit business organization of influential and diverse women and men dedicated to the advancement and empowerment of women through avenues of leadership, education, advocacy and mentoring.





Mina Bissell, Ph.D., Receives 2012 Distinguished Lectureship in Breast Cancer Research

The American Association for Cancer Research is pleased to announce that Mina J. Bissell, Ph.D., distinguished scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, is the recipient of the 2012 AACR Distinguished Lectureship in Breast Cancer Research. Read more


Dana-Farber’s Belfer Institute for Applied Cancer Science Appoints New Head of Research 

Jessie M. English, Ph.D., a current WICR Council member, was recently appointed as the head of research at the Dana-Farber Belfer Institute for Applied Cancer Science. She brings extensive industry drug discovery experience to the position. Read more
