PHILADELPHIA — The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) and the John and Elizabeth Leonard Family Foundation announce a new partnership for a fellowship opportunity in basic cancer research.

“The American Association for Cancer Research is very pleased to be partnering with the John and Elizabeth Leonard Family Foundation to offer a fellowship opportunity to young investigators,” said Margaret Foti, Ph.D., M.D. (h.c.), chief executive officer of the AACR. “We are in the midst of the most serious crisis in funding for biomedical research in decades, and researchers at the start of their careers are particularly vulnerable. The AACR is committed to sustaining the pipeline of young investigators because we rely on these individuals to add new scientific discoveries to the knowledge base that spurs progress and saves lives from cancer.”

“Funding a basic science fellowship is an important element of the mission of our family Foundation and we are delighted to work with the AACR to fund a fellowship award for a new investigator,” said John E. Leonard, Ph.D., president and chief executive officer of the John and Elizabeth Leonard Family Foundation.

Candidacy is open to postdoctoral and clinical research fellows who have fewer than three years of relevant postdoctoral research experiences at the start of the grant term, which will begin on July 1, 2014. The proposed research may be in any area of basic cancer research.

Recipients will be recognized at the AACR Annual Meeting 2014, which will be held April 5-9, in San Diego, Calif.

In addition to the fellowship provided by the generous support of the John and Elizabeth Leonard Family Foundation, the AACR is funding three additional basic cancer research fellowships for a total of four fellowships.
