American Association for Cancer Research

National Cancer Research Month 2009

The American Association for Cancer Research is proud to be based in Philadelphia, the city which is home to more NCI-designated cancer centers than any other city in the United States. Every day, researchers in Philadelphia are working to prevent, treat and cure cancer.

Russel Kaufman, M.D., president and CEO of the Wistar Institute is working with his research team to save lives through science. Today's Wistar researchers are finding ways to prevent cancer with vaccines, detect cancer early through blood tests and design new drugs to target cancer at the molecular level.

David Weist, Ph.D., works with his team at Fox Chase Cancer Center to turn basic cancer science into advanced cancer medicine. Currently, he studies genes that are essential to blood cell development, which tumors need to survive.

Tom Curran, Ph.D., deputy scientific director at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, works with other scientists to produce groundbreaking research in pediatric cancer. Thirty years ago, few children survived cancer. Today, almost 80 percent of children survive.
