American Association for Cancer Research

Making Cancer Research a National Priority

Always at the forefront of cancer research legislative advocacy, the AACR is currently working with Senators Edward Kennedy (D-MA) and Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) as they seek to renew the nation's focus on cancer. Their goal is to improve the spectrum of cancer research and care in the U.S., from prevention and early detection through treatment and survivorship, and they intend to introduce legislation to achieve this objective.

Leading an expert cancer research working group comprising scientists from among the AACR's membership and other organizations, and cancer survivors and advocates, the AACR is helping to prepare this legislation by submitting innovative ideas and suggestions for items to be included in the bill. The AACR working group is also helping to identify and prioritize the bill's many components.

The next step in the legislative process is a hearing in the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, during which Senators Kennedy and Hutchison will hear from a panel of expert witnesses about the gaps that exist in cancer research and care, and how these problems should be addressed.
