Research!America honors Margaret Foti, Ph.D., M.D. (h.c.), for her leadership and dedication to cancer research, treatment and prevention
Margaret Foti, Ph.D., M.D. (h.c.), chief executive officer of the American Association for Cancer Research, received Research!America’s 2012 Raymond and Beverly Sackler Award for Sustained National Leadership. Foti was honored for her national leadership role in science and public policy, and in particular, for her tireless and effective advocacy for federal funding for cancer research and biomedical science during her long tenure as chief executive officer of the AACR. HOUSE PANEL SCRUTINIZES NIH BUDGET PROPOSAL
Lawmakers raise questions about new translational center
NIH Director Francis Collins, along with other institute officials, appeared before a key House appropriations panel on March 20 to discuss the administration’s proposed budget for fiscal year 2013, which would freeze NIH at $31 billion. Collins also spent much of the hearing fielding questions from lawmakers about the newly established National Center for Translational Science (NCATS). Read more

The National Cancer Advisory Board (NCAB) of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) convened its first meeting of the year in late February. Dr. Harold Varmus, NCI director, Dr. Doug Lowy, deputy director, and Dr. James Doroshow, deputy director for clinical and translational research, provided information on NCI’s budget for FY2012 and FY2013, a clarification about the institute’s payline, and an update on the provocative questions initiative.
