President Selects Former New York City Health Department Commissioner, Thomas Frieden, M.D., M.P.H.

President Obama has appointed Dr. Thomas Frieden, M.D., M.P.H., former commissioner of the New York City Health Department, as director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

During the announcement, President Obama praised Frieden for leading anti-tobacco efforts that substantially reduced the number of smokers in New York City. President Obama also noted that under Frieden's leadership, New York City has increased cancer screening, improved collection and availability of community health information, and implemented the country's largest community electronic health records project.
