President Obama's nominee wins Senate approval
By unanimous voice vote on May 18, the U.S. Senate confirmed Dr. Margaret A. Hamburg to lead the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The vote came two months after President Obama nominated her for the position.
Hamburg is a former commissioner of health for New York City and has also served as the assistant director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease of the National Institutes of Health.
According to the Associated Press, Hamburg told senators at her confirmation hearing that she will use her position to help restore public confidence in the FDA by putting science first and by running an open and accountable operation.
