American Association for Cancer Research

Take Action Now

Updated: March 4, 2010

Periodically, Action Alerts are sent to AACR members requesting them to take some specific action with regard to pending legislation and agency rules affecting cancer research.

It is also important for AACR members to reach out throughout the year to build and maintain strong relationships with legislators and their staffs.

WINTER/SPRING 2010 ADVOCACY

Help ensure that cancer research is a priority in the FY2011 budget

The FY2011 budget process has been set in motion. In the annual budget proposal to Congress, President Obama recently recommended that Congress boost funding for biomedical research by $1 billion in fiscal year 2011.

The president’s recommendation is on the right track; however, it does not sustain the funding increases included in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, a decision that could hinder the very progress and innovation that the Act stimulated.

Through the early spring, House and Senate Budget Committees will be working to develop a budget resolution that will broadly determine how much to spend on health care and biomedical research. During this stage in the annual budget process, it is absolutely crucial that legislators hear from you and understand what is at stake if cancer research is not adequately funded in FY2011.
