Professional Advancement Series Sessions
In today's extremely competitive environment, success in science depends on developing a diverse array of skills that will support an outstanding research career. Through academic training, scientists learn how to be keen observers and to absorb tremendous amounts of information, to conduct solid experiments and competently analyze results, and to carefully examine the work of other scientists. However, success in science also depends on outstanding speaking skills, developing networks and mentorships, achieving an exemplary publication history, and more.
The Associate Member Council presents Professional Advancement Series sessions at the AACR Annual Meeting that offer advice on building these critical career development skills. These sessions are open to all early-career scientists attending the meeting. They feature leading AACR scientists as speakers and roundtable leaders, offering opportunities for early-career scientists to learn, network, and be mentored. An annual half-day Grant Writing Workshop is offered annually. Other past programs have included sessions on scientific publishing, research careers for clinical fellows, setting up a laboratory, and communication skills.
"Future Leaders, New Directions" Special Symposium
The Council developed this program in 2007 at the behest of then-President Geoffrey Wahl and oversees the nomination and selection process each year. This special scientific symposium highlights the work of outstanding early-career scientists whose work reflects innovation, creativity, scientific independence, and motivation. Speakers for this session must be nominated by the dean, director, or designated leader of the cancer research organization and their principal investigator/mentor.

Town Meeting
The Town Meeting is an open forum held during the AACR Annual Meeting for all early-career scientists (both AACR members and non-members).
This meeting offers the opportunity to voice opinions and concerns that will help to shape future programs of the Associate Member Council. During the meeting, attendees can also learn about membership in the AACR, become involved in the AMC Committees, and make valuable connections with special VIP guests and senior AACR members.
A meeting place/resource center open to all graduate students, medical students and residents, clinical fellows, and postdoctoral fellows at the AACR Annual Meeting. Located on the exhibit floor adjacent to poster sessions, the Associate Member Resource and Career Center is open during poster hours.
