The First AACR Cancer Health Disparities conference, held November 27-30, 2007, in Atlanta, Georgia, was a landmark event on the path of understanding and, ultimately, eliminating the disparities in cancer that represent a major public health problem in our country. Over 500 researchers from around the world joined 70 eminent speakers to address various topics including carcinogenesis, molecular etiology, biomarkers, epidemiology, prevention, cancer communications, translational research, treatment, health economics, and survivorship. The plenary sessions were designed to maximize transdisciplinary interactions, by having no overlap with other sessions, while the breakout sessions allowed for more informal communication between attendees and speakers. Over 200 abstracts were presented in poster sessions, facilitating additional networking opportunities among the nearly 600 attendees.
