The regulation of protein synthesis has emerged as a crucial component of cancer cell survival, transformation, invasion, and metastasis. In support of the critical function of translational control in cancer is the discovery of mutations in translational components in genetic syndromes associated with cancer susceptibility. Efforts are underway to capitalize on this new understanding by targeting specific translation components in the development of new therapeutics, and a number of clinical trials indicate that translational control constitutes an important new area for drug development. This AACR Special Conference focused on many of these issues.
