American Association for Cancer Research

Landon Foundation-AACR INNOVATOR Award for International Collaboration

Applications are now closed.

Program Mission Statement

International research collaboration can successfully address the global health problem of cancer through access to unique populations and environments, shared resources, specialized expertise, new concepts and perspectives, innovative methodologies, and/or emerging technologies. However, barriers to sustaining these collaborations exist, such as the lack of funding as well as the lack of sharing of knowledge about these important research partnerships.

This Award will support highly meritorious research that is being conducted collaboratively by investigators in different countries around the world. The goals of the program are to:

  • Overcome barriers to international collaboration by providing funding for costs traditional grant mechanisms may not support;
  • Raise the profile of the importance of collaboration to conquering the cancer problem; and
  • Provide the means to facilitate travel and the sharing of knowledge that otherwise may have been difficult to achieve.

The Award

$100,000 over the grant term ($50,000 per year) will be provided to the recipients' institution in the form of a two-year grant to support the collaborative research project, and may be used for such purposes including, but not limited to those listed below:

  • The salary and benefits of postdoctoral or clinical research fellows and/or research assistants;
  • Equipment;
  • Supplies;
  • Travel between the collaborators’ institutions relevant to the collaboration;
  • Training in new techniques that will benefit the collaboration, such as training received through a scholar exchange/visiting professor program;
  • Travel between the collaborators’ institutions relevant to the collaboration; and
  • Presentations of research data at scientific meetings or through other means that will contribute to the dissemination of the scientific knowledge gained.

Eligibility

Applications will be accepted from two or more independent investigators working within an established international cancer research collaboration involving institutes in multiple countries. Proposals to initiate a collaborative project will not be accepted.  Only one investigator per institution is to be identified as a Collaborator.

The Collaborators may be affiliated with any institution involved in cancer research, cancer medicine, or cancer-related biomedical science anywhere in the world. There are no citizenship or geographical requirements.   Employees or subcontractors of a government entity or for-profit private industry may serve as Collaborators, but no grant funds may be directed towards these individuals or their respective institutions.  Contact AACR before submitting an application to determine Collaborator eligibility.

Applicants must hold a doctoral degree (including Ph.D., M.D., D.O., D.C., N.D., D.D.S., D.V.M., Sc.D., D.N.S., Pharm.D., or equivalent doctoral degree, or a combined clinical and research doctoral degree) in a related field and not currently be a candidate for a further doctoral or professional degree. Postdoctoral or clinical research fellows or the equivalent who are working under the auspices of a scientific mentor are not eligible to apply and may not be named as a Collaborator.

Members of the Scientific Review Committee are not eligible for these grants. Any individual who is a current recipient of an AACR grant may not apply. Past AACR grantees may apply if they complied with all progress and financial report requirements.

Applicants may apply for all applicable grants; however, individuals may accept and hold only one AACR grant at a time.

Applicants with a question about their eligibility are encouraged to contact AACR at grants@aacr.org before submitting an application.

The Kirk A. & Dorothy P. Landon Foundation

landons.jpgThe Kirk A. and Dorothy P. Landon Foundation was created through a bequest from Mrs. Dorothy P. Landon whose intent, along with that of her late husband, Kirk A. Landon, was to dedicate a major portion of their estate to medical research, especially research related to cancer. Mr. R. Kirk Landon, son of Kirk A. Landon, serves as the President of the Foundation. The Foundation seeks to accomplish its cancer research mission through a variety of programs and initiatives, including the Landon-AACR Prizes and the Landon-AACR INNOVATOR Awards.
