This AACR Special Conference was unique among other UPS or cancer meetings for its strategic positioning at the interface of two major relevant research fields (Ubiquitin and Cancer); strong clinical component; and attention given to the role of Ubiquitin in epigenetic regulation. The conference was arranged to cover two main topics: 1) basic research on the role of the UPS in cellular processes that are relevant for cancer and 2) the discovery, preclinical, and clinical development of small molecule inhibitors of UPS components.
Nearly 150 scientists and researchers participated in the third AACR Special Conference focusing on Ubiquitin and Cancer. The 2008 conference provided an overview of the field of protein ubiquitylation, including the review and discussion of the regulation of cellular processes that are relevant for cancer; provided an overview of the role of the UPS in malignancy and of opportunities for therapeutic intervention (drug targets); evaluated the successes and limitations of existing as well as proposed therapeutic approaches to interfere with the UPS; and provided a forum for interaction among cancer scientists and experts in the field of protein ubiquitylation.
