AACR Award for Lifetime Achievement in Cancer Research

The Award

The AACR Award for Lifetime Achievement in Cancer Research was established and first given in 2004 to honor an individual who has made significant fundamental contributions to cancer research, either through a single scientific discovery or a body of work. These contributions, whether they have been in research, leadership, or mentorship, must have had a lasting impact on the cancer field and must have demonstrated a lifetime commitment to progress against cancer.

The 6th Annual Award will be presented at the 2009 AACR Annual Meeting in Denver, CO, U.S.A. (April 18-22, 2009). The recipient must be present to receive the Award unless otherwise unable to do so because of health restrictions or other serious conflicts.

The recipient will receive an honorarium, a commemorative plaque, AACR Honorary membership, and full support for the winner and a guest to attend the AACR Annual Meeting.


Eligibility Criteria

  • Nominations may be made on behalf of individuals who are living at the time of the nomination.
  • Candidates need not be members of the AACR.
  • Candidates need not be currently engaged in cancer research.
  • There are no restrictions with regard to race, gender, nationality, geographic location, or religious or political views.
  • The Award will be presented to an individual investigator.
  • Institutions or organizations are not eligible for the Award.


Nomination Process

Nominations may be made via letter from any scientist, whether an AACR member or nonmember, who is now or has been affiliated with any institution involved in cancer research, cancer medicine, or cancer-related biomedical science.  Candidates may not nominate themselves.

Nomination letters must be sent electronically to the AACR to awards@aacr.org no later than 4:00 p.m. United States Eastern Time on Thursday, October 30, 2008. Preferred file formats are *.doc, *.pdf.  Paper nominations will not be accepted.   Your nomination is not considered fully submitted until you receive a confirmation e-mail from the AACR; confirmations will be sent within 2 business days.

The nomination letter must be addressed to the Selection Committee; be written in English; and not exceed 1,000 words.  The content should include the following:

  • the name of the AACR Award for which the candidate is being nominated;
  • a brief statement of no more than 50-words summarizing the candidate's significant fundamental contributions to cancer research;
  • a concise description of the candidate's single scientific discovery or body of work; and
  • a concise description of how these contributions, whether they have been in research, leadership, or mentorship, have had a lasting impact on the cancer field and demonstrate a lifetime commitment to progress against cancer.  Publications supporting these contributions may be directly referenced within the letter.

Nominators are asked to maintain the confidentiality of the nomination process and to refrain from informing the candidate about the nomination.

There is no restriction on the number of candidates that may be nominated by any individual scientist.  There is no restriction on the number of nominators that may write nomination letters or that may sign a single nomination letter on behalf of a candidate.


Selection

Candidates will be considered by a Selection Committee of international cancer leaders appointed by the President of the AACR. After careful deliberations by the Committee, its recommendations will be forwarded to the Executive Committee of the AACR for final consideration and decision.  Selection of the Award winner will be made on the basis of the candidate's significant, fundamental contributions to cancer research (whether in research, leadership or mentorship); the lasting impact of these contributions on the cancer field; and the demonstration of  a lifetime commitment to progress against cancer.

The recipient of the 6th Annual AACR Award for Lifetime Achievement in Cancer Research will be announced in February 2009.
