The AACR Annual Meeting is the world's largest and most comprehensive gathering of professionals in the cancer field, encompassing basic, translational, and clinical research. This year's meeting took place from Saturday, April 1, to Wednesday, April 5, 2006 at the Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C.
The AACR Annual Meeting is the most important cancer research meeting in the world. Attendance is essential for all who are committed to learning about the latest discoveries and trends across the entire spectrum of cancer research. Whatever your specialty, affiliation, or stage of professional development, from graduate student to faculty member or industry professional, from laboratory researcher to clinical/translational scientist or health care professional, from cancer survivor to patient advocate, you have the opportunity here as nowhere else to increase your knowledge, broaden your perspective, and share your insights with others with the same dedication to research on cancer.
This year’s theme was centered on new and promising therapeutic approaches, and was reflected in the Opening Plenary Session, titled “Looking into the Future of Cancer Therapy.” This session featured Bert Vogelstein, Todd R. Golub, Gregory L. Verdine, Ralph Weissleder, Susan D. Desmond-Hellmann, and Irving L. Weissman, who are world leaders in the fields of cancer genetics, molecular diagnostics, chemistry, imaging, clinical research, and stem cell biology, respectively.
The 2006 Annual Meeting offered something for every one of the 17,000 individuals who attended. The final program included 18 Forums and Special Sessions, 46 Symposia, over 50 Minisymposia, nearly 60 Meet-the-Expert Sunrise Sessions, 14 New Concepts in Organ Site Research Sessions, the Public Forum, 7 Poster Sessions featuring nearly 6,000 abstracts, and a wide array of Educational Sessions and Methods Workshops.
Through a joint sponsorship agreement with the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California and the American Association for Cancer Research the 2006 meeting has been certified as a CME activity and has been designated for a maximum of 54.75 Category 1 credits toward the AMA Physician’s Recognition Award.
