The AACR and the Warner-Lambert Company (now Pfizer) established the AACR-Bruce F. Cain Memorial Award in 1982 to honor Dr. Bruce F. Cain of New Zealand, whose scientific interests involved the design, synthesis, and biological evaluation of potential anticancer drugs. This important award is given to an individual or research team to recognize outstanding preclinical research in the fields of medicinal chemistry, biochemistry, or tumor biology as related to drug discovery that has implications for the improved care of cancer patients; it encompasses anticancer, antiviral, and antifungal agents. The final Award was presented in 2006.
