Making National Headlines
The AACR Annual Meeting 2018 brought together more than 22,500 scientists, clinicians, advocates, and others to share the latest innovative advances in cancer science from around the world. The meeting generated global interest as illustrated by the significant amount of news coverage, social media activity, and web traffic.

Press Program Highlights

  • Media Preview. On March 15 (30 days before the meeting), the AACR hosted its first ever media preview. Hosted by AACR President Michael A. Caligiuri and Annual Meeting Program Chair Elaine R. Mardis, the event attracted 60 registered reporters.

  • STAT News Live Chat. Sharon Begley, STAT senior science writer, hosted AACR President-Elect Elizabeth M. Jaffee for a live webchat previewing the Annual Meeting.

  • Press Conferences. The AACR hosted three scientific press conferences featuring 10 scientific abstracts. In addition, the AACR hosted a press conference to announce the first funding gift to the joint AACR-MPM Transformative Cancer Research Grants Program in support of innovative research.

  • AACR June L. Biedler Prize for Cancer Journalism. Chaired by Fortune Magazine Editor-in-Chief Clifton Leaf, the Biedler Prize judging panel awarded prizes to outstanding journalists in six categories.

  • "Meet the Experts" Media Reception. New this year, the AACR hosted a reception for the media to meet Past President Michael A. Caligiuri and President Elizabeth M. Jaffee, who spoke about their AACR presidential priorities.

 Social Media Highlights

  • National Exposure. The #AACR18 hashtag trended nationally on Monday, April 18.

  • Launch of AACR President Twitter Account. The AACR launched the @AACRPres Twitter handle during the Annual Meeting to document the activities of new AACR President Elizabeth M. Jaffee.

  • Facebook Live Broadcasts. The AACR broadcast seven events via Facebook Live, garnering more than 21,500 views.
