James J. Mezhir, MD, assistant professor of surgery in the Division of Surgical Oncology and Endocrine Surgery at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, died Feb. 3, 2016, at the age of 42.
Born June 28, 1973, in Niagara Falls, New York, Mezhir survived a diagnosis of non-Hodgkin lymphoma when he was a teenager, which led him to pursue a career in cancer research and working with cancer patients. Mezhir received his medical degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo and completed a residency at the University of Chicago.
Mezhir joined the faculty at the University of Iowa in 2010, following a fellowship in surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. His primary clinical practice focused on the treatment of pancreatic and gastrointestinal cancers, and his laboratory efforts focused on understanding the complex biology of these cancers.
He received several recognitions throughout his career, including two Teacher of the Year awards from the general surgery residents and general surgery medical students at the University of Iowa.
Mezhir had been an AACR member since 2010.
