John W. Cramer, PhD, emeritus member of the AACR, died September 26, 2017, at the age of 88. His research focused on chemical cancer causation, chemotherapy, and cell division.
Born Oct. 15, 1928, in Freeport, Illinois, Cramer received his bachelor’s degree from Beloit College in Beloit, Wisconsin, and his master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison). He was also a postdoctoral fellow at UW-Madison in the Department of Biochemistry and McArdle Laboratory for Cancer Research.
Cramer remained in academia throughout his career before retiring in 2000, holding teaching and research positions at UW-Madison; Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut; University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville; the University of Nevada-Reno School of Medicine; and Mercer University School of Medicine in Macon, Georgia.
Cramer first joined the AACR in 1960 as an active member and served on the State Legislative Committee. He was also a member of the Chemistry in Cancer Research and Cancer Immunology Scientific Working Groups.
Additionally, he was a founding board member and secretary of the Nevada Division of the American Cancer Society and board member and past president of the Georgia Division, as well as a member of the American Society of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, American Society of Cell Biology, American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Biochemical Society of London.
