Julian L. Ambrus, Sr., MD, PhD, a longtime member of the AACR, died Jan. 16, 2020, at the age of 95.
Ambrus was born Nov. 29, 1924, in Budapest, Hungary. He began medical studies at the University of Budapest in 1942. His studies were interrupted when he was sent to a Soviet prisoner of war camp in 1945. After World War II ended, Ambrus earned his medical degree from the University of Zurich in Switzerland. Along with his wife, Clara (Bayer) Ambrus, MD, he did postgraduate work at the Pasteur Institute and Hospital in Paris.
In 1950, Ambrus and his wife came to the United States. He completed a doctorate in medical sciences from Jefferson Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia.
Ambrus joined the staff of what was then Roswell Park Memorial Institute in Buffalo in 1955, ultimately becoming director of Roswell Park’s cancer research and chairman of the Department of Pathophysiology, as well as running Roswell Park’s Springville Laboratory. He was also a department chairman at the University at Buffalo (UB) Medical School.
After Ambrus stepped down from his administrative posts in 1992, he stayed on as senior member of UB’s Roswell Park Division and professor of internal medicine in the UB Medical School. He was also a staff physician at Buffalo General Hospital.
Ambrus joined the AACR in 1956. Among many career honors, Ambrus was a laureate of the American College of Physicians. He was a foreign member of the National Academy of the Sciences in Hungary and the European Academy of the Sciences and the Arts.
