Harold L. Newmark, DSc, PhD (hc), emeritus member of the AACR, died January 11, 2014, at the age of 95. Newmark was resident adjunct professor and consultant at Rutgers University School of Pharmacy, in Piscataway, New Jersey.
Newmark was known for his important contributions to cancer prevention research, including his work on calcium and colon cancer prevention.
Born July 21, 1918, in the Bronx, New York, Newmark served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He worked as a chemist at Hoffman-LaRoche before working in cancer research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, in New York, New York, and Rutgers University.
Rutgers honored Newmark’s contributions to cancer research with an honorary doctorate. Additionally, he received the Townsend Harris Medal from the Alumni Association of the City College of New York.
Newmark joined the AACR in 1982. He was also a member of the American Society of Cancer Research, the American Chemical Society, and the Society of Sigma Xi.
