Earl F. Walborg Jr., PhD, a biochemist who was a member of the AACR for 45 years, died May 24, 2017, at the age of 81.
Born Nov. 13, 1935, in Chicago, Dr. Walborg earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Austin College in 1958 and his PhD in biochemistry from Baylor College of Medicine in 1962.
Walborg joined the faculty of the Biochemistry Department at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in 1974. He also participated in the development of MD Anderson’s Virginia Harris Cockrell Cancer Research Center in Smithville, Texas, better known as Science Park, and he spent the remainder of his academic career at that campus.
Dr. Walborg studied chemical-induced liver cancer with an interest in environmental carcinogenesis. In 1985, he started Dermigen, a consulting firm focused on cancer-related toxicology.
Dr. Walborg retired in 2009, and that same year, completed his work on a book titled ””The Science Park: Dream to Reality, The First Twenty Years.
Dr. Walborg joined the AACR as an active member in 1972 and became an emeritus member in 2013.
