Molecular Epidemiology Working Group Charter

MEG/AACR is a Scientific Working Group of epidemiologists, molecular biologists and geneticists, biochemists, toxicologists, nutritionists, clinical and translational researchers, pathologists, biostatisticians, ethicists and researchers from any other relevant scientific discipline who are interested in working together to increase knowledge about cancer and chronic disease etiology, thereby promoting the cure and prevention of cancer and the improvement of public health.

Mission Statement

The Mission of the Molecular Epidemiology Group of the AACR (MEG/AACR) is to foster and strengthen team-based, trans-disciplinary research to develop a more
integrated understanding of cancer etiology and outcomes in human populations.

Governance, Structure and Function

Steering Committee

The Leadership of MEG/AACR consists of a Steering Committee, which develops initiatives and programs to further the scientific and professional goals of MEG/AACR and its members. The Steering Committee also may advise the Chairperson on matters of leadership, such as formation of ad hoc Committees and appointment of editors for the MEG/AACR E-nnouncement, website, and Listserv.

Reports on the activities and programs of MEG/AACR, as well as minutes of major meetings, shall be submitted to the Board of Directors for their review. Proposals of major initiatives will be submitted to the Board of Directors in advance for approval.

The Chairperson-elect and Past Chairperson shall be members of the Steering Committee.

Additional members of the Steering Committee will be appointed by the Chairperson of MEG/AACR, who will take into consideration appropriate scientific and geographic diversity of MEG/AACR leadership.

Election of Chairperson

The slate for MEG/AACR elections will be developed by a Nominating Committee. The Nominating Committee consists of five individuals: the Steering Committee Past-Chairperson, the current Steering Committee Chairperson, and three additional individuals who do not currently serve on the Steering Committee, to be appointed by the Steering Committee Chairperson. The Nominating Committee Chairperson shall be elected by the Committee, and must not be a current member of the Steering Committee.

The Nominating Committee will submit a slate consisting of two candidates for each open position. Candidates must be members of MEG/AACR, and shall submit their CV and additional statements as requested, which will be developed into an election ballot. The ballot will be distributed each fall; all current members of MEG/AACR will be asked to vote. The annual rotation in leadership will become effective at the AACR Annual Meeting at the MEG/AACR Annual Town Meeting of MEG/AACR.

MEG/AACR Membership

Any member of the AACR in good standing may join MEG/AACR by paying the membership fee. Members may join at any point during the year; MEG dues may be paid via the AACR dues invoice, or via a separate membership form. Annual dues are $25.00 for Active Members and $10.00 for Associate Members.

Communication and Policies

An AACR-MEG Staff Liaison shall be appointed by the AACR Chief Executive Officer to perform all administrative functions necessary to execute the initiatives of MEG/AACR, in keeping with the policies of the AACR.

MEG/AACR may submit proposals for molecular epidemiology-focused special conferences to the Special Conferences Committee or, in the case of non-US conferences, the International Affairs Committee.

The participation of representatives from the field of cancer molecular epidemiology on key AACR committees is considered important to ensure regular dialogue regarding appropriate inclusion of the emerging field of molecular epidemiology in the scientific programs of the AACR.

Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention has been adopted as the official journal of MEG/AACR. Reasonable requests for publication of notices and advertisements by MEG/AACR shall be accommodated whenever possible.

Annual Budget and Financial Viability

The AACR will receive dues monies from MEG/AACR members that will help to offset a portion of the costs of the day-to-day operation of MEG/AACR. Since the costs of administering the programs and activities of MEG/AACR will far exceed these annual revenues from MEG/AACR dues, additional revenue will be required. It is hoped that the members of the Steering Committee of MEG/AACR along with MEG/AACR members at large will, through their knowledge of the field, be able to identify promising new sources of revenue for MEG/AACR projects.

This Charter will be revised from time to time, as considered appropriate, to reflect the goals and objectives of MEG/AACR and the AACR.
