Research Interests/Vision Statement:
I am an Associate Professor at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) and my lab uses intravital imaging, mouse models, and genomic approaches to study how the tumor microenvironment (TME) affects metastasis and therapy responses. Our focus has been on several different TME components, including extracellular matrix, macrophages, fibroblasts, and most recently neutrophils/neutrophil extracellular traps.
I am honored to be elected TME chairperson-elect. I will strive to continue the efforts of prior TME Steering Committees to ensure high quality, exciting TME-focused research presentations at the AACR Annual Meetings and at the TME-specific AACR Special Conferences. I specifically aim to feature new technologies and emerging research topics, as well as research that is prime for translation. In this regard, I see TME research expanding to also cover a “body level” understanding of the host factors that affect cancer: e.g., systemic inflammation, microbiota, co-morbidities, tumor-brain interactions, sleep, and stress. Strong basic research is the foundation for future translation and I will aim to bring together academics, clinicians, pharmaceutical industry, and patient advocates. I intend to draw on my experiences with organizing sessions at prior AACR Annual Meetings (2010; 2014; 2018; 2019) and TME-focused Keystone Symposia (2017; 2018), as well as my role as co-chair of the Signal Transduction Program in the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) Cancer Center. Finally, I will use my experience as co-chair of the CSHL Faculty Advancement Committee for junior faculty to support trainees, junior investigators, and underrepresented groups with opportunities for oral presentations and workshops on manuscript/grant writing, and staff management/development.
