Johann S. de Bono, MD ChB, MSc, PhD, is Regius Professor of Cancer Research at The Institute of Cancer Research, a college of the University of London, and The Royal Marsden Hospital. He has led on the development of abiraterone, cabazitaxel, enzalutamide, olaparib, lutetium PSMA as well as molecular genomic stratification, and germline sequencing for DNA repair defects, of advanced prostate cancer. Professor de Bono leads the Drug Development Unit at the Royal Marsden which comprises >100 staff and conducts >50 Phase I clinical trials at any one time. He runs a translational research laboratory. He and his team have received numerous awards including the ESMO award in 2011, the AACR Team Science Award in 2012, the AACR–Joseph H. Burchenal Memorial Award for Outstanding Achievement in Clinical Cancer Research in 2018, and the Jan Waldenstrom Prize in 2025.
