From Patient to Patient Advocate
Breast cancer survivor Marshelle Harris accompanies others on their cancer journeys.
My name is Marshelle Harris, and I am a proud breast cancer survivor, advocate, and author. My journey with cancer was not just a medical experience—it was a life-altering awakening that reshaped how I view health, purpose, and advocacy. Cancer changed me.
When I was diagnosed, I quickly realized that navigating the health care system required more than just showing up for appointments. It required knowledge, support, confidence, and a voice. I had to learn how to advocate for myself by asking the right questions, understanding treatment options, and making informed decisions about my care. That experience ignited a passion within me to ensure that others do not feel alone or powerless in their journeys. I felt alone and powerless at first; I lost my voice, my body, my hair, and my relationships.
As a survivor, I have faced the physical and emotional challenges that come with diagnosis and treatment. From managing side effects to rebuilding my strength and identity, I learned that healing goes beyond medicine; it includes mental, emotional, and spiritual wellness. This realization became the foundation of my work.
Today, I serve as an independent patient advocate, speaker, and coach, helping individuals—especially those facing serious health diagnoses—navigate their journeys with clarity and confidence. Through my programs, books, and community outreach, I empower others to take control of their health, communicate effectively with their care teams, prioritize whole-person wellness, and share their stories through writing to become self-published authors.
Editor’s note: Marshelle is an alumnus of the AACR Scientist↔Survivor Program®. This special educational program is held during the AACR Annual Meeting.
