The AACR Cancer Research Education for Success (CARES) High School Scholars Program is a national initiative designed to inspire and prepare the next generation of cancer researchers. The program offers high school students a unique opportunity to explore cancer science through a two-part experience:

  • Summer Research Experience: Students are placed at leading cancer research institutions for a six-week, immersive research program. Under the guidance of faculty mentors, they gain hands-on exposure to real-world cancer research in a supportive academic environment.
  • Continuing Mentorship: Following the summer program, students receive one year of structured mentorship and career development support directly from the AACR. This includes access to the AACR’s mentorship network, academic guidance, and exclusive engagement opportunities with leaders in the field.

The AACR is currently accepting applications from cancer research institutions interested in hosting the Summer Research Experience. Selected institutions will receive grant funding and programmatic support to design and deliver enriching research experiences for high school students.

Once host institutions are selected, students will apply directly through those sites. In the meantime, interested students can sign up for updates to be notified when participating institutions are selected.

The AACR CARES High School Scholars Program offers a unique opportunity for institutions committed to advancing STEM education and for students eager to explore a future in cancer research.

Both institutions and high school students must apply to participate.
