On November 8, 2018, the American Association for Cancer Research embarked on an unprecedented collaboration with NBC10/Telemundo and the City of Philadelphia for a television broadcast called Progress and Promise Against Cancer Day, which aired from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Held in conjunction with the AACR Philadelphia Marathon, this live TV broadcast brought together the greatest minds in cancer research representing seven of the Philadelphia region’s largest health care and academic institutions to answer questions from viewers. Progress and Promise Against Cancer Day was also dedicated to encouraging Philadelphians to increase their physical activity as a form of cancer prevention by participating in the Marathon Weekend, which is organized by the City of Philadelphia.

More than 20 distinguished AACR-member physicians and scientists specializing in various types of cancer took questions, in English and Spanish, from viewers who called, emailed, or texted their questions during the program. The AACR also convened survivor advocates to engage with viewers to learn about their cancer journeys, and to share their own story.

Throughout the day-long event, experts, advocates, and staff fielded over 1,000 questions covering a range of topics about the breakthroughs and advancements in cancer research, including prevention, early detection and diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship.

In addition, NBC10 and Telemundo shared stories about breakthroughs in cancer research led by Philadelphia cancer experts, which have resulted in practice-changing treatments for patients worldwide, as well as inspiring stories of survivor advocates who have benefited from lifesaving cancer research.

The AACR was proud to partner with the Philadelphia Marathon and NBC10/Telemundo62 for this interactive TV broadcast. Together, Progress and Promise Against Cancer helped to educate the public about cancer research, supporting the AACR’s commitment to community education about cancer.
