An internationally renowned expert in the development of molecular targeted agents, Dr. Baselga has conducted research that led to substantial improvements in survival forpatients with multiple types of breast cancer. His works includes the clinical investigation of novel agents targeting the HER2 and EGF receptors. Dr. Baselga played a leading rolein the pivotal clinical trials of trastuzumab, everolimus, lapatinib, and pertuzumab. Currently, his research focuses on novel anti-HER2 agents, resistance, and the development of PI3K pathway inhibitors.
Dr. Baselga is well known for his caring bedside manner and supportive mentorship of young physician scientists. He cites the translation of research from his laboratory benchto the bedside as one of the most fulfilling parts of his career, highlighting the vast possibilities generated by genetic profiling and constantly evolving personalized therapy. A native of Spain, he founded the Vall d’Hebron Institute of Oncology at Vall d’Hebron University Hospital in Barcelona, and, through his efforts, the Institute has become one of the major translational research and cancer treatment centers in Europe. While there, he devoted much of his time to developing preclinical and early-stage clinical studies of targeted therapies that would revolutionize breast cancer treatment.
Among his many professional responsibilities, Dr. Baselga served as a senior editor of AACR’s journal Clinical Cancer Research and is currently the founding co-editor-in-chief of the AACR journal Cancer Discovery.
