For pioneering advances in leukemia and stem cell biology, including essential contributions to the development of the hematopoietic stem cell mobilizing agents plerixafor and motixafortide and for identifying JAK1/2 signaling in graft-versus-host disease, which led to the identification and approval of JAK inhibitors, including ruxolitinib. His discoveries defining clonal evolution in acute myeloid leukemia have transformed the understanding of relapse and most recently, have advanced novel CAR T and CAR-iNKT therapies for T-ALL, multiple myeloma, thereby expanding available treatment options and improving patient outcomes.
The AACR established the AACR Award for Outstanding Achievement in Blood Cancer Research to recognize an individual on the basis of their meritorious achievements and contributions to any aspect of blood cancer research and who has made a significant scientific contribution to basic, translational, or clinical research related to blood cancer or associated disorders such as myelodysplastic syndrome or myeloproliferative neoplasms.
