Progress and Promise Against Cancer Webinar 2017

This webinar took place on Oct. 17, 2017, and featured leading experts from the American Association for Cancer Research and a patient advocate. Through an interactive discussion, they provided highlights from the AACR Cancer Progress Report 2017, and offered their perspectives on the latest advances in cancer research and the importance of continued robust, sustained, and predictable increases for medical research funding.

Published annually, the Cancer Progress Report describes how cancer research is saving lives, and outlines challenges for cancer patients, advocates, and researchers, with a special emphasis on cancer health disparities.

This webinar was hosted by the AACR and Cancer Today, a patient and caregiver magazine published by the AACR.

William G. Nelson, MD, PhD – Moderator

Editor-in-Chief of Cancer Today, Marion I. Knott professor of oncology and director of The Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. A trained medical oncologist, Dr. Nelson directs a research laboratory focused on discovering new strategies for prostate cancer treatment and prevention. He is also a recognized leader in translational cancer research.

Michael A. Caligiuri, MD

AACR president, chair of the AACR Cancer Progress Report Steering Committee; chief executive officer and director of the James Cancer Hospital & Solove Research Institute at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center in Columbus, Ohio. For the webinar, Dr. Caligiuri provided an overview of the past year’s progress in cancer prevention, early detection, treatment, and survivorship. He also discussed areas of future focus including health disparities and big data.

George D. Demetri, MD

Chair, AACR Science Policy and Government Affairs Subcommittee; member, AACR Board of Directors; Quick Family chair of medical oncology, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute; professor of medicine, Harvard Medical School; and co-director, Ludwig Center at Harvard. Dr. Demetri explained the current cancer research funding landscape, its impact on progress against cancer, and how you can get involved.

Adrienne Skinner

Adrienne is a patient advocate with Lynch syndrome. She was diagnosed with metastatic ampullary cancer in 2013. After participating in a clinical trial testing an immunotherapy drug, she was declared cancer-free. Adrienne shared her cancer journey, and perspective about participating in a clinical trial.
