Selection of Participants

The application deadline is Friday, April 26, 2024. Applicants will be notified of their status in early June.

The Workshop Faculty will review and accept applications from predoctoral students (who will be in their fourth year or later at the time of this workshop) and postdoctoral fellows, early-career scientists (those who are not postdoctoral fellows and who received their PhD on or after March 2018), and a limited number of senior scientists beyond the postdoctoral level (from academia or industry). Although most applicants generally have doctoral degrees, applicants with MDs are also encouraged to apply. In addition to molecular epidemiologists, we invite applications from geneticists, statisticians, bioinformaticians, molecular biologists, and others. A requirement for the course is that participants must have successfully completed basic course work in epidemiology. The Workshop Faculty will select a group of 50 participants based on the materials submitted by the applicant and by the applicant’s sponsor (mentor, program supervisor, or department head). In general, faculty look for applicants with a strong publication record, research experience, clearly articulated and specific goals to conduct integrative molecular epidemiology research, a supportive environment, and a career trajectory with a future as an independent investigator. Note that selection of workshop applicants will be conducted on a competitive basis, as not all applicants can be accepted each year due to limited space. Unsuccessful applicants are encouraged to reapply the following year.

The AACR is committed to increasing the participation of traditionally underrepresented minority investigators, as identified by the NCI, in cancer and biomedical research. Individuals from these groups are strongly encouraged to submit applications. Note that selection of workshop applicants will be conducted on a competitive basis, as not all applicants can be accepted each year due to limited space. Applicants who are not selected for the current year are encouraged to reapply.

Accepted Early-Career Participants

Early-career participants (predoctoral students, postdoctoral fellows, and early-career scientists) will be required to pay a minimal registration fee of $1200. This will cover registration and complimentary hotel accommodations in Philadelphia, PA at the designated workshop hotel for the four nights of the workshop, as well as offset the costs of workshop materials and most group meals. Participants will be required to pay for their own travel to and from Philadelphia, PA.

Note that no fee is required to submit an application.

Senior Scientists

The Workshop Faculty will also admit a limited number of senior scientists beyond the postdoctoral level. Applicants are invited from academia and industry. Senior scientists will be required to pay a registration fee of $1,800 for the workshop. All senior scientists will be responsible for covering the cost of their own travel and lodging. All participants will receive complimentary meals offered as part of the workshop.

Computer Requirements

All participants are required to bring a laptop to the workshop.

Transportation from the airport

All accepted participants are expected to make their own travel arrangements to Philadelphia, PA. Local travel arrangement information will be provided to all accepted applicants.

Workshop Housing- Sharing Accommodations

All early-career participants must reside at the designated workshop hotel for the duration of the workshop and participate in all group meals. They will receive the following complimentary accommodations: a hotel room to be shared with one other workshop participant for the five nights of the workshop. Early-career participants who request other accommodations at the hotel will be responsible for half the amount that AACR would have been charged for the complimentary shared accommodations ($152.50 plus tax and any room incidentals offered as part of the package.  

Senior scientists are urged to reside at the designated workshop hotel, but are not required to do so. The workshop rate for single/double occupancy is available to all senior scientists. Senior scientists will have the option of sharing hotel rooms with other participants depending upon availability.
