Selection of Participants 

The application deadline is Tuesday, March 26, 2024. Applicants will be notified of their status by early June. 

The workshop leadership will select a group of 40 total participants based on the materials submitted by the applicant and by the applicant’s sponsor (mentor, program supervisor, or department head; n/a for senior scientists). The workshop faculty will seek a group of participants who have made outstanding progress in their medical training, who have displayed an interest and competence in clinical or basic research, and who come from a diverse group of training institutions and personal backgrounds.  

Of the 40 total accepted participants, up to five spaces will be awarded to Senior Scientists and the remaining 35 or more spaces will be awarded to Trainees, those who applied as an oncology fellow or resident. 

Note that selection of workshop applicants will be conducted on a competitive basis, as not all applicants can be accepted each year due to limited space. Those who are not selected for the current year are encouraged to reapply the following year. 

Registration Fee  

Accepted trainees (oncology fellows/residents) will be required to pay a registration fee of $2,500 for the workshop. This will cover their registration and complimentary shared hotel accommodations at the workshop hotel as well social events, workshop materials, and certain group meals. Trainees will be required to pay for their own travel to and from the workshop.  

Accepted senior scientists will be required to pay a registration fee of $2,900 for the workshop. All senior scientists will be responsible for covering the cost of their own travel and lodging.   

All participants will receive complimentary meals offered as part of the workshop.  

Workshop Site 

All workshop sessions and certain meals will take place at the Loews Coronado Bay Resort, located in Coronado, California, just 30 minutes from the San Diego airport. 

Transportation  
All accepted participants are expected to make their own travel arrangements to the workshop, including arrangements for transportation from the train, bus, or airport to the hotel. 

Accommodations 

Early-career participants must reside at the workshop hotel for the duration of the workshop and participate in all group meals. Early-career participants will receive the following complimentary accommodations, which are included as part of their registration: a hotel room to be shared with one other participant for the full week of the workshop. Early-career participants who request other accommodations (single-occupancy or a room shared with a non-attendee) at the workshop hotel will be charged half the cost of the room.  Early-career participants in the San Diego area are encouraged to stay at the workshop hotel since the program includes early morning and evening events. Please note that the registration rate for all early-career participants (out of area and local) is the same regardless of accommodations selected. 

Senior scientists are encouraged to reside at the workshop hotel. The workshop rate for single/double occupancy is available to all senior scientists. Senior scientists will have the option of sharing hotel rooms with other participants depending upon availability. 

Computer Requirement 

All participants are required to bring a laptop to the workshop.  

Workshop Materials 

Participants will receive recommended reading prior to the workshop. Faculty members will provide suggested references. Laboratory Directors will provide a detailed syllabus of the material to be covered in their hands-on laboratory sessions. Trainees will receive access to a workshop-specific website with these course materials, recommended reading, general workshop information, and opportunities to network.
