Richard G. Moran, PhD, retired associate director for basic research at the Virginia Commonwealth University Massey Cancer Center in Richmond and an emeritus member of the AACR, died November 19, 2025. He was 80 years old.
Born in Boston on September 10, 1945, Moran received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and mathematics from Boston College in 1967 and a doctorate in pharmacology from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1974. He pursued postgraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Southern California.
He joined the faculty at USC, becoming co-leader of the developmental therapeutics program at USC’s Kenneth Norris, Jr., Cancer Center in 1989 and a full professor in 1992.
In 1993, he joined VCU’s Massey Cancer Center as co-leader of the developmental therapeutics research program, a position he held for the rest of his career. He was appointed Massey’s associate director for basic research in 1998.
Moran was also a professor of pharmacology and toxicology at the VCU School of Medicine and the Paul M. Corman, MD, chair in cancer research, positions he held until he retired in 2015.
