Alfred G. Knudson Jr., MD, PhD, Fellow of the AACR Academy, died July 10, 2016, at the age of 93. Knudson was a pioneering cancer researcher who is internationally recognized for his groundbreaking “two-hit” hypothesis, which helped provide the basis for our current understanding of the genetic origins of cancer.

Peter C. Nowell, MD, Fellow of the AACR Academy, died December 26, 2016, at the age of 88. Nowell, the Gaylord P. and Mary Louise Harnwell Professor Emeritus in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania, was renowned for his codiscovery of the Philadelphia chromosome, which, for the first time, provided evidence of a genetic basis for cancer.
