The AACR is honored to recognize these outstanding members for their dedication to the association and to the field of cancer. Hans Konrad Muller
Hans Konrad Muller, MBBS, AACR Emeritus member, died July 27, 2017, at the age of 80. Muller was a was a pathologist, academic and medical educator.
Satyabrata Nandi
Satyabrata Nandi, PhD, AACR Emeritus member, died July 29, 2017, at the age of 86.
Albert Owens
Albert H. Owens Jr., MD, inaugural director of the Johns Hopkins Oncology Center in Baltimore, died January 13, 2017, at the age of 90.
Catherine M. Phelan
Catherine M. Phelan, MD, PhD, active member of the AACR, died September 22, 2017, at the age of 49. She was an associate member in the Department of Cancer Epidemiology, Population Sciences Division, and the Department of Gynecologic Oncology at the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida.
Oliver W. Press
Oliver W. Press, MD, PhD, AACR member since 1990, died September 29, 2017, at the age of 65. Press was a physician-scientist who specialized in blood cancers, especially lymphoma, and served as acting director of the Clinical Research Division at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle from 2013-2016.
Edward J. Sarcione
Edward J. Sarcione, PhD, AACR Emeritus member, died January 1, 2017, at the age of 90. Sarcione was professor Emeritus of the Cell Physiology Program in the Roswell Park Division of the University of Buffalo.
Oliver Smithies
Oliver Smithies, DPhil, fellow of the AACR Academy and the Weatherspoon eminent distinguished professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, Chapel Hill, died January 10, 2017, at the age of 91.
Jan Svoboda
Jan Svoboda, DSc, PhD, AACR Emeritus member, died March 13, 2017, at age 82. Svoboda was a renowned virologist and geneticist.
Heiko Van Der Kuip
Heiko van der Kuip, PhD, an AACR member who studied how tumor cells respond to chemotherapy, died November 25, 2017, at age 51.
W. Ralph Vogler
W. Ralph Vogler, MD, AACR Emeritus member, died December 2, 2017, at the age of 88. Vogler was a professor Emeritus at Emory University.
