In Memoriam: Marie Hakala-Zakrzewski

Maire T. Hakala-Zakrzewski, PhD, emeritus member of the AACR, died January 16, 2015, at the age of 97. She first joined the AACR in 1963. Hakala-Zakrzewski’s research focused on basic studies of all aspects of chemotherapy, including loss of drug response and enhancement of specific anticancer agent activities. She published nearly 100 research papers throughout her career.

Born Feb. 15, 1917, in Helsinki, Finland, Hakala-Zakrzewski received a master’s degree in biochemistry from the University of Helsinki. After immigrating to the United States in 1949, Hakala-Zakrzewski worked at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and then received her doctorate in biochemistry from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. She then worked in the Department of Pharmacology at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, before moving to the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, New York, where she worked until her retirement.
