Patrick W. Gavin, a pharmacy executive and patient advocate who participated in the AACR’s Scientist↔Survivor Program (SSP), died December 18, 2017, at the age of 68.
Gavin graduated from Ferris State University School of Pharmacy, served in the Michigan National Guard from 1968 to 1976, then built a long career as a pharmacist and a pharmacy executive with Meijer Inc. He served three terms as chairman of the Michigan Board of Pharmacy.He also served on the Coopersville Area Public Schools Board of Education.
In 2007, after being treated for cancer, Gavin became involved with numerous cancer research organizations, including the Cancer Research Consortium of West Michigan, the Van Andel Institute, the National Cancer Institute Patient Advocate Steering Committee, and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
He participated on a committee for the Van Andel Research Institute-Stand Up To Cancer Epigenetics Research Dream Team, and as part of the SSP program, attended the AACR’s Annual Meeting and the Science of Cancer Health Disparities conference.
