Prof. Manfred Volm was professor at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), Heidelberg. In the early 1970s, he developed a test for the individual prediction of chemosensitivity and -resistance of cancer patients, long before the current concepts of individualized therapies came up. Prof. Volm was among the first ones in Europe to investigate multidrug resistance and the role of P-glycoprotein. He also described prognostic factors for the survival of patients with lung cancer and other tumor types (flow cytometric measurement of aneuploidy, immunohistochemical detection of oncogenes and tumor suppressors). He was conferred the Award of the German Cancer Society (Deutsche Krebsgesellschaft) twice. Prof. Volm was a “swabian bedrock”, not always comfortable but always sociable and a hard-working, productive scientist. He was my supervisor during my PhD and early postdoc times at DKFZ. I am grateful for this support and leading my own way into science. May he rest in peace.
