Catherine M. Phelan, MD, PhD, active member of the AACR, died September 22, 2017, at the age of 49. She was an associate member in the Department of Cancer Epidemiology, Population Sciences Division, and the Department of Gynecologic Oncology at the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida.
Phelan, a molecular geneticist, focused her research on understanding the genetic and molecular underpinnings of breast and ovarian cancers. She conducted Genome-Wide Association Studies through funding from the National Institutes of Health and as a member of the Ovarian Cancer Association Consortium and the Consortium of Investigators of Modifiers of BRCA1/2, and was investigating the genetic etiology of breast cancer among women from eight Latin American countries along with a network of collaborators from those countries. She was also studying prostate cancer in African-American men.
Born April 5, 1968, in London, England, Phelan received her medical degree from the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland and her master’s and doctoral degrees from the Karolinska Institute in Solna, Sweden.
Phelan first joined the AACR in 2001, and was a member of the Women in Cancer Research Committee, Minorities in Cancer Research Committee, and the Tumor Microenvironment Working Group.
