AACR-Daniel D. Von Hoff Award for Outstanding Contributions to Education and Training in Cancer Research
The AACR Daniel D. Von Hoff Award for Outstanding Contributions to Education and Training in Cancer Research is intended to honor an individual in any subfield or sector of cancer research and cancer-related sciences who has contributed significantly to the education and training of cancer researchers and other professionals at all career levels, especially of early-career and early-stage investigators.
The award serves to honor Dr. Von Hoff’s sustained and extraordinary accomplishments as a dedicated and inspirational educator as well as his sustained innovative thinking about how to accelerate advances in cancer science and medicine. His personal tutelage and professional guidance of young clinical fellows and junior clinical faculty have contributed not only to their professional background and training, but also to their ability to apply learned principles to improve the care of countless cancer patients around the world.
Among many examples of his long-term impact in cancer research has been his seminal contributions to the inception and establishment of the AACR/ASCO Methods in Clinical Cancer Research Workshop as the premier workshop dedicated to educating oncologists on the principles of effective clinical trial designs and therapeutic interventions for the treatment of cancer.
The concept of this workshop has also been globally adapted to similar workshops in Europe as well as Australia, which has drawn attendance from individuals from India, New Zealand, Pakistan, and many other countries within Southeast Asia. Collectively, more than 4,400 young clinical investigators have been trained through these workshops for the benefit of cancer patients worldwide.
Individuals affiliated with any institution involved in cancer research, cancer medicine, or cancer-related sciences anywhere in the world may be nominated. Such institutions include those in academia, industry, or government.
The award shall be presented to an individual investigator in any subfield of cancer research or sector in the cancer field and related sciences.
Institutions and/or organizations are ineligible to receive the award.

Nominations may be submitted by an individual, whether an AACR member or nonmember, who is currently or has previously been affiliated with an institution involved in cancer research, cancer medicine, or cancer-related sciences.
Nominations from individuals who have benefited from the education and training of the nominated candidate are highly encouraged to submit a supportive nomination letter. Submitted nomination packets must not contain more than three such supporting documents.
Self-nominations are prohibited.
Nominators must maintain strict confidentiality of their nominations. All nominations must be submitted logging into https://myaacr.aacr.org and selecting Applications/Awards from the main menu. Eligible nominations must include the following:
- Nomination letters written in English (Max: 1,000 words), which comprehensively describe the candidate’s outstanding and innovative research and describes the candidate’s significant contributions to the education and training of cancer researchers and other professionals at all career levels, especially early career and early-stage investigators. All publications and activities that directly support the mentioned research and professional accomplishments must be referenced within this provided letter.
- A brief scientific citation (Max: 50 words) highlighting the major contributions made by the award candidate to foster the education and training of cancer researchers that justifies the award candidate’s nomination.

Eligible nominees will be considered by an Award Selection Committee composed of an international cohort of cancer research experts appointed by the AACR President. After award committee deliberations, primary and alternate award recipient recommendations will be relayed to the AACR Executive Committee for formal ratification.
Selection of the award recipient shall be made on the basis of the candidate's scientific accomplishments without regard to race, gender, nationality, geographic location, or religious or political views.
